Jason Koon Wins Record Fifth Triton Poker Title

The Triton Super High Roller series is one of those events on the poker calendar that poker enthusiasts and professionals have become accustomed to in the annual poker calendar. For its second season in 2023, the Triton Super High Roller series has attracted some of the biggest names.

This poker tournament, as the name suggests is designed to only attract wealthy poker players as well as renowned poker professionals. That’s because buy-ins at the Triton Super High Roller series start at $10,000 and can climb to a whopping $1 million. Whenever a Triton Super High Roller leg comes around, most of the world’s biggest poker professionals ante up.

The Vietnamese leg of the tournament kicked off between March 1st and 13th in Quang Nam at the Hoiana Resort and Golf. Typically, the Triton Series has a total of 3 stops. The first 2 were held in Cyprus and Madrid while Vietnam was added as the 3rd destination.

For their accomplishments, high rollers are awarded points, as well as a sizeable amount of cash. The points and the cash wins count towards a player’s total in the Player of the Year competition. This year, some of the most accomplished poker professionals are vying for this title including the current leader of the pack Stephen Chidwick.

The Vietnam leg featured 13 of the top 20 all-time high rollers who competed across 13 tournaments. Apart from Stephen Chidwick, some of the other names to watch included veteran Patrik Antonius from Finland, all-time poker winnings leader Justin Bonomo, USA-born Jason Koon, and Erik Seidel, as well as Germany’s Fedor Holz.

Jason Koon takes it home

In the end, it was Jason Koon that would take sole ownership of the top position on the leaderboard. This was Koon’s 5th Triton Poker title and a new record for the celebrated poker pro. Koon defeated one of the strongest fields of 31 during the $50,000 no-limit hold ’em turbo event.

Along with the title and the new record, Koon also walked away with the top cash prize of $574,000. Thanks to this win, Koon has now amassed lifetime tournament earnings worth $42,892,912. Today, he is ranked 7th on poker’s all-time money list and is one of 9 poker players to have successfully cashed $40 million-plus as a professional poker player.

During the $50,000 no-limit hold ’em turbo event only the top 5 finishers made profits from their $50,000 investment. The top 5 finishers each cashed at least $147,000. Isaac Haxton earned the least amount with $147,000 to show for his troubles. Punnat Punsri from Thailand finished in 4th place thus taking home $182,00.

The 3rd position, on the other hand, was bagged by Chris Brewer who earned 272 points for his troubles, as well as a cash prize of $252,000. Artur Martirosian missed the first-place position for 340 points and a $395,000 payday.

All in all, the Vietnam leg of the Triton poker series was successful with players successfully generating prize pools worth $55 million across 13 poker tournaments. This also included 2 tournaments with $100,000 buy-in. During the March stop at Hoiana, 2 records were also set.

Case in point, the $20,000 bounty event attracted the highest entries in the tournament’s history. In total, the bounty event attracted 179 participants, the most in Triton’s history. The $100,000 headliner was also another record championship event attracting 135 entries.

This event also marked the start of Triton’s brand-new partnership with PokerStake

In February this year, Triton announced that it had teamed up with PokeStake. The Pokerstake platform has been around since 2005 and offers its customers various ways of buying and selling action for online and live poker tournaments

PokeStake customers that are looking to sell list the events that they are playing, the action that they are interested in selling, as well as their markup. Prospects, on the other hand, can asses the offers made by the sellers, look at the statistics then decide whether or not they would like to complete their purchase.

All transactions take place on the platform, which means that there is always transparency and a clear line of ownership that can be traced. When both sellers and buyers can keep records of actions that are sold and bought, it eliminates the risk of a customer failing to pay up.

And it’s not just gamblers that buy and sell action on the PokeStake platform. Instead, poker professionals have also joined PokeStake to sell action for live poker tournaments like the European Poker Tour, World Poker Tour, the World Series of Poker, and more. Some well-known poker greats that do this on the platform include  Shaun Deeb, Daniel Negreanu, Jeremy Ausmus, Fedor Holz, and more.

Now, as a result of this partnership with Triton Poker, PokeStake will henceforth start offering authorized packages for the Triton high rollers. PokerStake customers will therefore now be allowed to own a piece of the best poker players in the Triton series every time they battle each other for millions.

This strategic partnership now means that PokerStake is an official partner of the Triton Series. In addition to branding live events, this partnership will allow poker players to gain access to the largest buy-in tournaments in the series, even if they aren’t necessarily participating.

To put into perspective just how lucrative investing in the PokeStake platform can be, a PokerStake customer that purchased 1% of Aaron Zang's action during the $1 million Triton London Super High Roller in 2019 would have walked away $167,758 richer as a result of his $16,775,820 win.

Several other poker players walked away with their first titles including 59-year-old British investment manager Talal Shakerchi who took part in the $100,000 No-limit Hold’em Championship.

Final Thoughts

The Vietnam leg of the Triton High Roller Series certainly did not disappoint. The high rollers that participated certainly earned bags of money for their troubles. Of course, Vietnam was the 3rd stop but Triton has promised to reveal an additional stop later on in the year.
