Draftkings Opens New Office in Las Vegas

DraftKings has opened a new office in Las Vegas in a bid to continue the growth of its empire.

Over 200 employees will eventually be working at the new location at Town Square, close to the ever-growing pool of talented gaming professionals in the area.

The company’s first office in Las Vegas, which opened in 2018, only had about 12 workers.

Since October 2018, the business has increased its employee count by 40% and announced a 20,000sq ft expansion of its Boston headquarters.

Its new move comes after the company agreed on a deal to merge with SBTech and Diamond Eagle Acquisition. The business reincorporated in Nevada as part of the deal.

The new location will host a call center to deal with aspects of customer experience and fraud, where staff will be able to handle inquiries throughout the day. The open office space leased from WeWork will rank second only to Boston, and will eventually run DraftKings Casino operations.

Much of the company’s operation is interchangeable between its offices in Boston, Hoboken, and New York, but DraftKings is aiming to access casino and sportsbook veterans in Las Vegas.

Johnny Avello, former sportsbook director at Wynn Las Vegas, was one of the first to join Draftkings’ new office. The company is now looking to hire similarly experienced players for its new location.

Avello led a tour through the new office with DraftKings co-founder Matt Kalish last week.

Speaking to reporters, Kalish said, “This is an iconic city when it comes to sports betting. It’s been the hub of all of that activity in our country for many decades. We see ourselves as looking to integrate as deeply as possible into the community.

“The opportunities with sports betting keep opening up nationwide. We want to make sure we continue to lead the pack and, to do that, we needed to invest in Las Vegas and take advantage of some of the great talent that’s here in this market.”

Home to the biggest casinos in the world, Vegas offers a talented workforce that the company wants to leverage to give their players a better gaming experience on the platform.

Avello added, “Finding this location, it’s been in the works for a long time and, to me, it’s perfect.

“Town Square has great amenities and this is a great work environment. It’s also close to the airport for people who need to get in and out. Anywhere where sports betting is legal, we’re looking to be in that market.”

Since its establishment in 2012, DraftKings has seen tremendous growth, and within two years it became the official daily fantasy sports service of the NHL and MLB.

In 2018, the company launched its first licensed online sportsbook in New Jersey and has expanded its services to New York, Indiana, Virginia, Mississippi, Indiana and Iowa since then.

DraftKings is also well-positioned to enter the sports betting business in other states, as more and more start to legalize sports betting.

Kalish started the company out of his spare bedroom with his friends Jason Robins and Paul Liberman and Draftkings quickly became a household name.

Draftkings sportsbook products are currently not allowed in Nevada as the company does not have a license, but it says it is planning to acquire one.

Kalish added, “In New Jersey, for example, you can download DraftKings and just start playing. We’re a digital company, so we don’t have a casino in Las Vegas where people can go sign up.”

“We’ve never had an urgency to go get a (Nevada) license because we didn’t have a way for consumers to get access to our product. We need to kind of solve that. We’d need a retail deal and we’re working on it.”
